Combining design-based pedagogies, free web 2.0 tools, and a project-oriented approach can support students in critically reading and interpreting culturally authentic literature. This session offers practical techniques for infusing 21st century skills into literature courses, and a summary of findings from a qualitative study of the pedagogical approaches presented.
Content & Purpose:
The importance of actively engaging students in their own learning is well documented by research in many fields. However, literature and culture are often taught using teacher-centered pedagogies (lecture, question answer, and teacher led discussions). This session engages participants in exploring how a project-based approach to learning culture and literature can support students in critically reading and interpreting culturally authentic texts and the cultural products, practices, and perspectives embedded within them. Participants will explore the characteristics of high quality, project-based learning through simple projects that use free, web 2.0 tools to develop students' 21st century skills. The session concludes with a summary of findings from qualitative research that was conducted in conjunction with these projects about the effects of such activities on student learning.
